Brain 2024

This hackathon was with DNV and the student organization Brain. I started gathering data before it even began. One of the posters had an NRK logo on it and was clearly from "Hurtigruten minutt for minutt", and since I figured the case would be about boats and collision avoidance, I downloaded the entire Hurtigruten broadcast. That gave us 800GB of video sitting ready before the first briefing, and the hunch turned out to be right.

On the day we were handed a small dataset of only 600 images of different boats. We trained on those, then ran the model over the Hurtigruten footage with a human in the loop: the model proposed detections, one of us pressed yes or no, and the dataset grew from there. The team worked well together and everybody had something to do.

We did not win the hackathon, but we got a strong score in the Kaggle competition and took home the award for most fun presentation.
